How Business Day Calculation Works

A business day (or working day) typically refers to any official working day from Monday through Friday, excluding weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and officially recognized public holidays. When computing delivery windows, service-level agreements (SLAs), or statutory notice periods, business days provide a standardized timeline that reflects actual commercial operations.

Handling US Federal Observed Holidays

When a fixed-date federal holiday falls on a weekend, standard federal guidelines shift observance: holidays on Saturday are observed on the preceding Friday, while holidays on Sunday are observed on the following Monday. Toggling the holiday option automatically accounts for these observed dates.

Common Workplace & Legal Applications

Counting business days is essential for legal cooling-off periods (e.g., 3-day right of rescission), ACH direct deposit settlement times (typically 1 to 2 business days), real estate escrow closing dates, and shipping courier guarantees.
